Summary of Thyroid Cancer
What is Thyroid Cancer?
Thyroid cancer occurs when cells in the thyroid gland — a small gland at the base of the neck responsible for producing hormones — begin to grow uncontrollably. Treatment typically involves surgery and may include radioactive iodine, targeted drugs or radiotherapy depending on the type and stage.
How rare is it?
In the UK there are around 4,000 new cases of thyroid cancer each year, which makes it roughly 1 % of all new cancer diagnoses. About 440 people die from it annually — it is not among the 20 most common causes of cancer death.
Who does it affect?
Thyroid cancer is more common in women than men, with around 2,900 new cases in females and 1,100 in males each year (2017-2019). Incidence rates are highest in people aged around 70-74, though survival is much better in younger people.
RareCan has over 3,000 members, here’s what some of them say.
