Kidney / Renal Cell Cancer Information
What is Kidney Cancer / Renal Cell Cancer?
Kidney cancer (also known as renal cancer) occurs when cells in one or both kidneys grow out of control and form a tumour. The most common subtype in adults is renal cell carcinoma, which develops in the lining of tiny tubes inside the kidney. Other, rarer forms include cancers of the renal pelvis or ureter. Generally, kidney cancer starts in just one kidney and may spread if untreated.
How rare is it?
In the UK, kidney cancer accounts for about 4 % of all new cancer cases, making it the 6th most common cancer. Each year there are roughly 13,800 new diagnoses across the country. Although not amongst the very rarest cancers, it remains much less frequent than cancers such as breast, lung or bowel.
Who does it affect?
Kidney cancer becomes more common with age and is rarely seen in younger adults. Around three-quarters of cases are diagnosed in people aged 60 or over. Men are at higher risk than women.
RareCan has over 3,000 members, here’s what some of them say.
