Summary of Oesophageal Cancer

Oesophageal cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow in the lining of the oesophagus (food pipe) and form a tumour. Because the oesophagus connects the throat to the stomach, this type of cancer can affect swallowing and may spread to nearby organs if not treated.

In the UK, oesophageal cancer accounts for about 2% of all new cancer cases (around 9,400 each year). It is the 14th most common cancer overall and more common in men than women. Around 13% of people diagnosed survive for ten years or more.

Oesophageal cancer is much more likely in older adults—the highest incidence is in those aged around 85-89. Men are at higher risk than women (lifetime risk for males is about 1 in 54, for females about 1 in 120 in the UK). People in more deprived areas have higher rates than those in the least deprived areas.

RareCan has over 3,000 members, here’s what some of them say.
